Tortellino d'Oro

Joburg has many Italian restaurants but just a few of them are authentic Italian. The Tortellino d'Oro is one of those few. In this modest restaurant you will enjoy a delicious meal and you can also buy Italian sauces, fresh pasta, panettone, bread and Italian ice cream.

My fiance invited me to this place for my Birthday. Just as we sat down, the waiter brought us two glasses of sparkling wine, then delicious bread with 3 types of accompaniment. Good starter.

The waiter recomended us starters and main courses. At last we chose to start: figs with gorgonzola and prosciutto and asparagus a la parmesan. The main course was: ossobuco and spaghetti frutti di mare.

While we were waiting for our meal, I could see that the atmosphere was animated. All the tables were busy, every one with different kinds of occupants: families, friends or couples of different ages. Sure they were there for the food.

The starters were absolutely delicious and the only thing about the main courses is that they looked so good that we forgot to take a picture!! Sorry, but believe me, this restaurant deserves to be in our category: "The best food"...

Le Bistro Petit Cochon

If you're looking for a quiet place to have a nice and private conversation, this french bistro can be the place. It may be described by the word simplicity. They don't have a written menu, each day they choose le plat du jour and two alternative dishes which the waiter explains to you at the table.

For our lunch, we ordered a plate of the day which consisted of chichen breast, vegetables and rice (we could have chips instead of these sides) and a salad with some cheese and cooked ham. The food tasted homemade! What I most liked was the french bread basket that we get with some butter....hum. But actually, I'm suspicious to say cause I love all kind of bread.

After a long time chatting we decided that we deserved a beautiful chocolate mousse tart to share. It was really delicious, even more with an expresso together.

Il Giardino Degli Ulivi

Well, this was our first lunch in 2013 and we had some nice companions! As always it was lovely and funny. The chosen place for this event was the restaurant Il Giardino Degli Ulivi, which is inside the charming complex Stanley 44, in city centre, near to Wits University.

There is no parking, you should find a place on the street, and be careful not to stop in forbidden places (I took a fine).

The ambient is very pleasant, tables in open-air below tree shadows and a fountain in the middle allowing you to relax and enjoy the good food. You can stay there for some hours without noticing.
I ordered the stylish hamburguer, big beef with buffala muzzarella, pesto, tomato, bread and some chips. It was a large and delicious meal, suitable for the hungry on duty!
I liked so much the place that I went back on a Saturday with my husband and the good experience was repeated. This time I realized that the service was perfectly right. My husband had the filet and he said it was extremely delicious and I tried the gnocchi in blue cheese sauce. Simple divine!

For the grand finale we ordered a tiramissu desert and expressos. What a perfect meal, atmosphere and vibe! I fully recommend it.

Something about Us...

We are two foreign girls living in Joburg trying to discover hidden spots in the city. Our motivation is to find specials places to eat and to have some fun away from the standard circuit of malls and franchising. Besides, maybe we can help other people to enjoy what is good in life. Because eating is not about feeding your body with some food, it's an EXPERIENCE, a time to indulge yourself, to have a good conversation, to share with friends and family, to have an unforgetable moment. Therefore we'll suggest not only places with good food but places where you can experience something different, where you can find something more. Thus, we hope you could taste and enjoy our adviced places! If so, please follow our blog and recommend it to your fellows.

La Vie en Rose

Its name makes you remember that beautiful and romantic song of Edith Piaf; with its garden full of roses, colors and the glittering of light passing across the leafs, you can confirm that in Joburg there are places where you can see and breath the life in rose.

This secret garden offers you the possibility of take a delicious breakfast or tea in a beautiful place while you are gazing at a hundred year old inhabitant of this city…of course, I can only be talking about the stunning tree in the garden that could perfectly justify come to this restaurant.

In the beginning, they were concentrated on breakfasts and lunch. Recently they open for dinners. I hope that with time and effort, they could be as good at the other meals such as breakfast which is undoubtedly, its strength.

There are two menus, one for the day and other for dinner. The day menu includes: Breakfast, Sandwiches, Wraps, Salads, Light Meals, Burgers, Pastas, Desserts, Hot Beverages and Cold Beverages. The dinner menu offers Starters, Salads, Light Meals, Burgers, Pastas, Desserts and Wine.

This time, at luch we tried Fame! Salad, Looks Like Fun Hamburger and Ricotta & Pumpkin Ravioli. All of us agreed in which the food was fine but the really special thing of this place is the garden. It’s charming, the perfect place to have a coffee or tea.
